چکیده

The Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation admits a two-dimensional solitary wave solution representing two mutually self-propelled, anti-parallel straight line vortices. The complete sequence of such solitary wave solutions has been computed by Jones and Roberts (J. Phys. A, 15, 2599, 1982). These solutions are unstable with respect to three-dimensional perturbations (the Crow instability). The most unstable mode has a wavelength along the direction of the vortices of the same order as their separation. The growth rate associated with this mode is evaluated here, and it is found to increase very rapidly with decreasing separation. It is shown, through numerical integrations of the GP equation that, as the perturbations grow to finite amplitude, the lines reconnect to produce a sequence of almost circular vortex rings.

Decay of soliton-like perturbations into vortex - anti vortex pairs

This paper suggests a method to create dark soliton-like waves in a trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). With the phase imprinting method, a soliton-like disturbance is produced along the x-axis. The method is used in two cases (with and without rotation of a trapping potential). The disturbance in a two-dimensional (2D) system is unstable. The soliton-like perturbation is found to de...

Vortex motion in trapped Bose–Einstein condensate

We have studied the motion of a vortex-antivortex pair together with a single vortex in trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by numerically solving the twodimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and found that the path of the vortices depends on the initial separation distance and dissipation. This motion was periodic and it was found that sound waves appear due to the cyclical movement, whose...

Dynamical thermalization and vortex formation in stirred two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a quantum-mechanical treatment of the mechanical stirring of Bose-Einstein condensates using classical field techniques. In our approach the condensate and excited modes are described using a Hamiltonian classical field method in which the atom number and rotating frame energy are strictly conserved. We simulate a T=0 quasi-two-dimensional condensate perturbed by a rotating anisotrop...

Split instability of a vortex in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate.

An attractive Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex splits into two pieces via the quadrupole dynamical instability, which arises at a weaker strength of interaction than the monopole and the dipole instabilities. The split pieces subsequently unite to restore the original vortex or collapse.

Soliton trains and vortex streets as a form of Cerenkov radiation in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We numerically study the nucleation of gray solitons and vortex–antivortex pairs created by a moving impurity in, respectively, 1D and 2D Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) confined by a parabolic potential. The simulations emulate the motion of a localized laser-beam spot through the trapped condensate. Our results for the 1D case indicate that, due to the inhomogeneity of the BEC density, the c...
